There is a big collection of hwiangerddi existing in the folk tradition in Wales, but only a small number of them are true to the real meaning of Hwiangerddi, which means songs that were meant to lull a baby to sleep. Rather, they are songs full of amusement which include many little stories and simple words making it easy for young children to learn the Welsh language.
Hwiangerddi are folklore that is full of mischief and appeal to young children. They are a great way of introducing language and pronounciation to children, as they are full of word that are relevant to a young child’s life which makes it easy to remember. This folklore and Welsh heritage will remain in the child’s mind throught his life.
CYW on S4C have released some of these Hwiangerddi on their new programme called Caru Canu - you can view the programmes here.
