On Monday 28 May at 2.00pm Dewin and Doti’s brand new app and series of four books will be launched in the company of the books’ author Nia Ceidiog at Mudiad Meithrin’s stall at the Urdd Eisteddfod.
Dewin and his faithful dog Doti, are Mudiad Meithrin’s unique characters. They live in the Balalŵn up high in the sky and enjoy whizzing down to play with children at the Cylchoedd Meithrin (Welsh-medium playgroups) dotted throughout Wales.
The series of 4 new books are called Dewin a Doti yn yr Archfarchnad, (Dewin and Doti in the Supermarket) Dewin a Doti’n Helpu yn y Gêm Fawr (Dewin and Doti Help in the Big Game,) Dewin a Doti’n Helpu yn y Pwll Nofio (Dewin and Doti Help in the Swimming Pool), and Dewin a Doti’n Mynd i’r Parc (Dewin and Doti go to the Park). The app is based on these 4 books and was created by Canolfan Peniarth and includes a voice-over of all four stories read by Nia Ceidiog, background noises and moving images to create an interactive element for young children.
This new resource pack will be of practical use to Cylchoedd Meithrin, Cylchoedd Ti a Fi, Mudiad Meithrin’s National Training Scheme learners and parents/carers as they introduce Welsh to young children in the early years.
The author of all four books is Nia Ceidiog, who is well known in the early-years field through her work scriptwriting and producing ground-breaking children’s programmes such as Sam Tân (Fireman Sam), Dwylo’r Enfys and Y Diwrnod Mawr.
Nia Ceidiog, said:
“What an honour! I’m really grateful to Mudiad Meithrin for the opportunity to contribute to its essential work by writing these simple little stories. They reflect the everyday lives of young children in Wales – in all their diversity – combined with the magic of those two lovely characters Dewin and Doti.
I was thrilled to be asked to read the stories for the app too – which means I will be reading them to thousands of children as they share those quiet moments with parents, Cylch leaders and of course grandparents! They’ll also be very useful to entertain children on those long car journeys and in other boring adult situations! The children will join in the magic call “Balalŵn” and imagine that Dewin and Doti are on their way to join them – and as always “ready to help!”
The books will be on sale from the Dewin and Doti shop – an on-line shop that sells Dewin and Doti unique resources – www.meithrin.cymru/shop/
Iola Jones, Mudiad Meithrin’s Head of Communications and Partnerships Team, said: “We are delighted that such a talented and experienced writer as Nia Ceidiog has agreed to write these four new books, and that Canolfan Peniarth has created an app that will be a great help to all those who want to introduce Welsh in the most lively and modern way to young children.”
