What is the Foundation Phase?
The Foundation Phase is the name of the statutory curriculum for all 3 to 7 year olds in Wales in schools and in 'non-maintained' settings such as Cylchoedd Meithrin and day nurseries.
It encourages children to be creative and to use their imagination and ensures that learning is fun and effective.
Children will have opportunities to explore the world around them and understand how things work by taking part in practical activities relevant to their stage of development. They will be challenged through practical activities and will develop their ideas through open-ended questions. Children will be encouraged to explore concepts and share ideas for problem solving.
Here are the 6 Foundation Phase Areas of Learning in Welsh medium settings
- personal and social development, well-being and cultural diversity
- language, literacy and communication skills
- mathematical development
- knowledge and understanding of the world
- physical development
- creative development.
