At 2.00 on Tuesday, 26 May, Mudiad Meithrin launched a new resource pack to support the work of cylchoedd meithrin (Welsh-medium playgroups) as they introduce the children in their care to the Foundation Phase. The pack includes snap cards featuring the Mudiad’s characters, Dewin & Doti. This resource is intended to expand cognitive and linguistic skills in young children. Additional materials focusing on developing literacy, communication, maths and numeracy will also feature. There was also an opportunity to hear more about an exciting Foundation Phase training day, aimed at cylchoedd meithrin, which was held held on June 3rd in Dolfor by Newtown.
During the launch, children where invited to take part in an activity using the snap cards for the first time. Cylch leaders and Foundation Phase teachers where also given the opportunity to learn more about the resources and discuss them with Vanessa Powell, Mudiad Meithrin Fundation Phase Development Officer, who has been responsible for developing the resource.
Dona Lewis, Mudiad Meithrin Deputy Chief Executive said:
“We’re excited to be launching this new Foundation Phase Resource pack at the Eisteddfod. Cylchoedd meithrin introduce the Foundation Phase to thousands of children every day so providing resources to assist them in that work is crucial. We also had a special and important training day on June 3rd which focused on the Foundation Phase, where world-renowned speakers discussed outside play. There was also a number of activities on mud kitchens, cooking and IT which where practical, useful and fun. We had a great day welcoming a number of cylchoedd meithrin to Dolfor near Newtown on that day.”
