Mudiad Meithrin welcomes Cymraeg 2050: Meithrin Miliwn Welsh language strategy which was recently launched by the Welsh Government, that recognizes the importance and influence of the early years on language, and agrees with the vision of having a million Welsh speakers by 2050. 'Meithrin Miliwn', a document created by Mudiad Meithrin, outlines the steps needed to enable the Mudiad to respond positively to the ambition of a million Welsh speakers by 2050.
Dr Gwenllian Lansdown Davies, Mudiad Meithrin’s Chief Executive said:
“The Welsh Government’s new language strategy recognises the importance of the early years in creating new Welsh speakers. In ‘Meithrin Miliwn’, we outline Mudiad Meithrin’s perspective on the necessary steps to enable that work noting the need for additional investment and better strategic planning.”
The Welsh language strategy states that it will support the expansion of Welsh-medium provision in the early years by 40 groups by 2021 to facilitate progression to Welsh medium education, so as to reach 150 Welsh language provisions by 2050.
“We therefore support the target of opening 150 new nursery groups – Cylchoedd Meithrin we assume - in the next phase. It’s essential to ensure that adequate resources are available to ensure that focus can be placed on this core proactive work. We propose that there is a need to review Mudiad Meithrin’s current financial resources (awarded by a Welsh Government grant), and state that it will be impossible to fulfil the aspiration without additional investment.”
